The Commercial gaming Management of Cambodia (CGMC) has released a new directive regarding unlawful gaming.

It was signed on February 19 by Aun Pornmoniroth, Head of the CGMC, and the Minister of Economy and Finance.

This comes just a few days after Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet called for stronger curbs on illegal gaming in the country, particularly lotteries.

The rule required licenced operators to follow the requirements of their licence and display it "at all times" on the site.

This is because the directive also requires local governments to collaborate with the CGMC to undertake frequent inspections of gaming establishments to guarantee that no unlawful activity is taking place.

The instruction explains: "Keno, lottery, and other unlawful gaming have a negative impact on public order, social security, and people's livelihoods in village communes.

"In order to ensure the sustainability, maintain good public order and social ethics, gambling businesses must work in accordance with the law."

Anyone found in violation of the law will be prosecuted in accordance with the Gambling Suppression Law, which states that anyone engaging in unlawful gambling may face a fine ranging from KHR5-20 million ($1,225 to $5,000), as well as imprisonment for up to five years.

The order goes on to say: "The relevant authorities must co-operate in managing, monitoring and reporting all activities that involve any kinds of illegal gambling, and must take legal action in a timely manner."
