According to reports, the 33-year-old former Scotland international, who played for teams like Oxford United and Bury, wagered on 52 football matches between March 2017 and February of this year.

FA rule E8, which prohibits "betting, either directly or indirectly, or instruct, permit, cause or enable any person to bet on the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in or in connection with, a football match or competition," would be directly broken by doing this.

Maguire has been suspended "without prejudice until further notice," Lincoln City said in a club statement. The player has until August 30 to reply to the accusations.

"Chris Maguire has been charged with misconduct in relation to an alleged breach of the FA's betting rules," the FA said in a statement.

In July 2021, Maguire signed a two-year contract to play for League One's Lincoln, having previously played for Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County.

After playing for Aberdeen from 2006 to 2009, Maguire—who earned two caps for Scotland in 2011—went out on loan to Kilmarnock and finally signed a long-term contract with Derby County.

Andrii Yarmolenko, a player for West Ham United FC at the time, was accused by the FA in February for alleged conduct violations, which included possible involvement in advertising or betting promotion.
